In the modern age where everything is done digitally and there is instant access to everything at our fingertips the influence of social media is at an all-time high. Platforms like TikTok and Facebook have taken over as tools. These tools have created people who shape public opinion by influencing so many different choices in behaviors and outcomes, in events like elections.
The Rise of Social Media in Politics
With Billions of users worldwide and so many different platforms like Facebook, YouTube, TikTok, and Instagram. These social media channels allow for instant access to real-time discussions and opinions of one another over the internet. Social Media has democratized political participation, allowing for individuals to voice their opinions, organize their thoughts, show their movements, and challenge traditional power structures.
The Spread of Misinformation and Disinformation
While social media has this huge potential to facilitate open dialogue and the exchange of diverse perspectives, it also harbors some of the worst elements. One of those elements is the spread of misinformation and disinformation on platforms like Facebook has emerged as a significant concern in the context of elections. Individuals setting false narratives the biggest spread of fake news, and the social media potential for things to go viral. This creates a challenge of trying to understand the real news and the fake news and how the importance of the intersection of social media and elections is.

Hey Zach! I really enjoyed reading this post. My blog is all about how media changes the way campaigns work and I'm so glad you mentioned how it works on the other side of things. While there is a whole lot of good, it is crucial that we acknowledge the negative sides of politics in social media. What struck me about your graphic was how Youtube was second to Facebook. Facebook is known to be a platform full political warfare, but Youtube never struck me as such. I guess it is a good way to get clips of the news that you miss, but when I usually think about social media, I think about how short and accessible the content is. Youtube has a more movie-like structure which is why that data surprised me. Thank you for sharing!
