In the digital age, social platforms have become the most used piece of software in the U.S. This is a place where people go to express their opinions, engage in debates, and talk about political processes. However, this freedom of social media comes challenges with what is posted and navigating the lines of social media platforms. At the core, the debate over censorship and content moderation revolves around the tension between protecting users from harmful or offensive content in free speech and open dialogue. Social media platforms, as community standards, include hate speech, violence, harassment, and even more misinformation.
However, the implementation of content moderation can not be talked about without it's own controversy. Critics argue that social media companies have too much power over conversations and talks online. Even with censorship, there is a problem with censorship in politics where people are allowed freedom of speech but still have problems with bias and censorship.
In recent years the issue has only gotten worse as social media has become the front-runner for campaign talks and companies using their platform to strike at the right balance of social media influencers. On the other hand there is a growing consensus that content poses a genuine threat to democratic norms and public safety as people choose violence over all and that is something that must be addressed.
Although we feel as if social media platforms should be able to contain certain acts. This is not as possible as it seems as people are entitled to freedom of speech and that counts for social media aswell. This is an ongoing problem in politics to this day.
